Ships Log w27 – Taking the Helm

One of my favorite quotes:

“People want leadership, Mr. President, and in the absence of genuine leadership, they’ll listen to anyone who steps up to the microphone”.   – Lewis  (Michael J. Fox in ‘The American President’)

I have looked high and low for a good collection of stories, plans – good or bad, or just a general account of people preparing for retirement. So in the absence of leadership, I will step up to the mic….. start your plan now.

Here is what I have learned thus far on this voyage:

    • There are no rules to follow for retirement so a plan is essential
    • No one has the answer – only you do
    • In our 30s, we contemplated cancelling our 401K to fund our current life-style and thankfully, we didn’t.
    • Manage your funds with help…its free advice and a good investment counselor is valuable and will help with a plan
    • Start thinking how much you will need monthly, in today’s dollars, to fund your retirement life-style. Where it will come from is the next step.
    • Do not fall for the trap that you can downsize your cost of living by 50% ….life happens and you won’t want to isolate yourselves from activities around you
    • Pay off as much as possible
    • Plan early …. in your 20s  to ensure you have the means and take stock often to see what has, or could change that would alter plan.
    • Your plan should reflect your interests/views of life not those around you.

Dream

Whether you are 25 or 52, you should consider what this life change will mean.  After all, most of you contemplated college or marriage or starting a family for years before it happened and wondered what that change would mean.  So here is your chance to stop, take a breath and jot down what your life vision would be when you don’t need to work full-time…or work at all!  Remember, no rules.  You can live anywhere, do anything, join whatever and, since there are no rules, you are at any age.  Start with a vision, reality comes next.  Consider how much you would need each month (gross) to fund that vision.  This is where you start to pare down.  But the key is to consider what life-style you would want. Start a plan.

Secondly, I would like to hear from you about these ideas.  If you have not yet thought about that phase because it is still too far away, post a comment (below) and let me/us know your thoughts.  If you are currently retired, post a comment to let us know how you planned for it.  Lets start to share stories and learn together.

PS…I have offered my layout for a plan here.
